We have a need for the same issue of needing to change the code.
A business is looking to completely redo their raw material item numbers into a sequential and grouped item numbering scheme rather than something haphazard that they currently have but they want to be able to pull up the history of the item's usage via the new number. They have been on SAP for 4 years now so have a lot of history to change.
I know I can do SQL Script for changing the number one table at a time in all 320 tables with item number references (including tables where it is called code, father, origitem, and couple other names) but it would be nice if someone has a utility for it.
